I’ve finally took the plunge to own by my blog, I NEVER THOUGHT I’D DO THIS!

I guess I just thought I wasn’t good enough to go self hosted, which is ridiculous as anyone can do it. Y’know what, i’m so glad I did it, it feels so good to own your internet space!

I went self hosted with SiteGround, they had a Black Friday deal that was just too good to resist. They provided a whole years subscription for only £44, which works out at roughly £2.00 a month, which is a total bargain! On the downside the prices will be at the higher rate when I purchase my 2nd year in 2018, dammit.

How does going self-hosted actually work?

This is something I wasn’t too sure of before I took the plunge, I mean I’d read the odd few blog posts but there were still so many details I didn’t know. I’m the kind of person that likes to know every little detail of how something works or I STRESS like mad, thinking something is going to go wrong.

Let’s start from the beginning:

When you purchase your deal with SiteGround you have to enter your WordPress login details (don’t worry it’s all legitimate) ,this is so they’re able to transfer over your site to your new domain. They’re able to transfer over all of your published and drafted posts however they can’t send over your followers, views  and theme. I wouldn’t worry too much about the followers not being transferred over as when you’re self hosted there is no option to follow your blog on WordPress, that’s where Bloglovin becomes your best friend.

It takes roughly 24 hours to switch your site over. Once it’s completed you will receive an email from Siteground with a link that’ll enable to login to your new blogs WordPress area. In my personal opinion this is the worst part of the process, sitting waiting, not having the control in your hands, but trust me, it’s all goes smoothly.

When you log in to your self hosted blog on WordPress you will have a basic theme, if i’m honest I wasn’t a fan of any of the free theme’s provided. This is where purchasing a new one comes in, one of the most popular companies for this which i’m sure you’ve all heard of is ‘PIPDIG’, their themes price at around £40. Personally, I didn’t want to spend that much money so I bought mine off Etsy, just type in ‘WordPress themes’ and loads will appear, the prices of them range from £6 – £40+.

I’M SO SO MUCH HAPPIER WITH MY BLOG NOW I’VE GONE SELF HOSTED! I just love the look of it, it’s all about personal enjoyment for me and now I’ve taken this step I take even more pride in my blog. I love the fact that you can now buy theme’s from independent designers instead of just provided WordPress ones!

If you have any questions about going self hosted feel free to leave them in the comments below, I’ll try to answer them the best I can.

    This is so exciting!

I went self-hosted with SiteGround but as you say; the second year was ridiculously expensive so I dropped it.

Hopefully, you can strike up a deal next year!

When your shopping around for your site next. I’m self hosting on wix and its only a £5 a month (this may change but thats the current price) which isnt badly going and i got my domain for a £10 for two years which was great aswell.

Good luck with self hosting though. Im sure you’ll do a smashing job and never want to go back to a hosting site 😄
