FEELING THE JANUARY BLUES

I’d like to take a moment to stop and talk about the ‘January Blues’ as it’s something I’m experiencing at the moment.

We’ve just left this bubble of happiness and joy surrounded Christmas and New Year and it’s back to reality; a one where everything is slightly more stressful. I’m sure you’ve noticed that during the festive time of year there’s a better atmosphere everywhere, everyones excited, shop staff are more friendly etc. It’s like all the little worries you have don’t matter, for a while they’re not real, you can just block them out by turning up the Christmas tunes on the Radio.

I’ll have you know, I’m not a fan of change as it is so this change gets to me every year, it’s like ‘boom the happiness period is over’. It’s now just cold for a few months and you’ve got nothing to look forward too until summers warmer weather (I get that’s kinda dramatic lol).

I find January consists of some people struggling with money after Christmas, colder days that feel so much longer, no pretty lights everywhere and a heck of a lot of motivation to get through it.

It’s the time of year where we set ourselves goals, targets we would like to have met by the end of the year. I understand that this can be gloomy and a sad time for some who feel like they don’t have anything to look forward too, especially if they feel like they’re stuck in a routine of doing something they don’t like.

It’s the time of year where self-care is needed; you need to regularly check in with yourself to be like ‘how am I feeling right now?’. ‘Do I need some time to myself?’ or ‘Do I need a bath to relax?’.

As exciting as goal setting is it isn’t the be all or end-all, the most important thing is that you get through the year is being happy. Do whatever it takes to achieve this.

MAKE THIS YOUR YEAR, THE YEAR TO PUT YOURSELF FIRST!

    I totally get the whole January blues thing; going back to school after Christmas & having to deal with a bunch of work from sixth form always gets me down. Doesn’t help that I’ve got a hundred deadlines looming over my head for the next month too! I find that the firsts three months or so of the year, like you say, before the weather gets a bit brighter, are so boring and dark and gloomy. I loose the whole ‘I love winter it’s so cosy!’ And start to become desperate to see the sun. I try to use the months to motivate myself but admittedly it can be really hard. I really enjoyed reading this post – it’s always interesting to read a less typical post surrounding the new year & I really liked this one!

    I do agree that it’s so easy to get yourself down in January, that the weather and the lack of holiday spirit just gets you down. Trying to be happy in this month is the best way forward into the new year, it sets you off on a good note of positivity you can spring from into February.

    I definitely feel worse in January. All the Christmas buzz has gone and it just feels rubbish. I need to remember that it’s important to put myself first though..

    This is me right now.. I agree that the festive atmosphere made it easier to get on with the days, but they all just flew by so fast. And then now we’re here, it’s January, another year to hustle. One of the things that excites me more than making goals is to make plans so I can have something to look forward to throughout the year. 🙂

    Such an important point to be made. I find it hard seeing people push all these new goals sometimes, because as much as it’s great to see people living their best lives it can leave me feeling left behind. You’re so right about self care being key!

    I feel you with the January blues – I just feel so out of it since I started back work this week. I know it’ll die down once I get back into a routine though. January is definitely the time for setting goals so thank you for remining me (being better at blogging is one of mine lol). I hope you have the best year ever, you deserve it!

    I always seem to struggle in January like you said money is tight too which doesn’t help. But this year I’m trying to be as positive as I can be and throw myself into my work.

    January isn’t my most favourite month of the year so I get the January blues like you! Everybody seems to be so happy at Christmas so it’s sad when that feeling goes away! xx

    January is a very complex month for in winter it’s cold and depressing which really affects one’s health but at the same time, January is a month of new beginning and change.

    Agree completely! It’s like you’re on such a high from the holiday season, and then nothing. Back to work, school, etc. Plus, here in North Carolina it’s just been rain and more rain. Ugh. Buy hey, no rain no flowers! (:

    I so agree with this! The pressure of a new year can be quite overwhelming but self care is everything, as you say 🙌 On the bright side though, January means spring isn’t so far away and I’m ready for warmer weather and picnics now! 😋

    Yes January for me is my worst month. Always starts off feeling great but then I seem to lose motivation quickly.. And it’s such a long month. But this is a great post! Thank you!

    I was definitely feeling this today. I do a lot of traveling over the holiday which is very disorienting. Thank you for the reminder that we all go through this rough patch!

    I completely agree with everything you’ve said here! I work in PR so I’ve been collating our coverage over Christmas this week and as a result I’ve had Christmas songs stuck in my head on a loop and I just want to go back to that lovely fuzzy festive feeling! Definitely going to be making self care a priority this year, it’s so important
